Digital Explorers II Workshop at Kenyatta University

On June 30th, kood/Nairobi joined the Digital Explorers II Workshop at Kenyatta University, an event led by the Estonian Centre for International Development (ESTDEV). This gathering united educators, policymakers, tech innovators, researchers, and development partners to examine new ways universities and industry can collaborate to cultivate the digital expertise required in our interconnected era.

For us at kood/Nairobi, the conversations reinforced a belief that has been central to our mission from the very beginning: the future of education must be collaborative, practical and closely aligned with industry’s needs.

Why collaboration matters

One of the strongest messages throughout the workshop was that preparing talent for the future of work is a shared responsibility. Universities provide strong academic foundations, while industry offers insight into evolving technologies, workplace expectations, and the skills needed in today’s digital economy. Bringing these worlds together creates learning experiences that are relevant, practical, and impactful.

This is exactly what kood/Nairobi seeks to achieve.

Our project-based, peer-to-peer learning model complements traditional education by enabling learners to build real software projects, collaborate with others, and develop the problem-solving mindset required in modern technology environments.

Learning without borders

One of the highlights of the workshop was learning more about the Digital Explorers programme, which connects ICT professionals from Kenya, Nigeria, and Armenia with opportunities in the Baltic States.

The programme is a powerful reminder that digital talent knows no borders. In today’s world, software engineers collaborate across countries, cultures, and time zones. This makes adaptability, continuous learning, and collaboration just as important as technical expertise.

At kood/Nairobi, we are preparing learners not only for Kenya’s growing digital economy but also for opportunities in the global technology ecosystem.

Innovation through partnership

The workshop also showcased exciting examples of innovation, including AI-assisted software development tools and machine learning solutions that support project matching and collaboration.

These presentations reinforced an important lesson: innovation flourishes when universities, industry, and development partners work together.

Equally important were the discussions around curriculum development. As technology evolves, education must evolve alongside it. Continuous engagement with software engineers, recruiters, and employers is essential to ensure graduates develop both strong technical foundations and the practical skills required by industry.

At kood/Nairobi, this philosophy guides our curriculum development. We actively engage industry professionals to understand emerging trends, identify skills gaps, and continuously refine our learning experience.

Building the future together

Our collaboration with Kenyatta University reflects a shared commitment to preparing learners for the future of work. By combining the University’s academic excellence with kood/Nairobi’s innovative, project-based learning model, we are creating new pathways for aspiring software engineers to develop practical, industry-relevant skills.

We believe education should not simply transfer knowledge — it should cultivate curiosity, resilience, collaboration, and the confidence to solve real-world problems.

Looking ahead

The Digital Explorers II Workshop, hosted at Kenyatta University, was more than an opportunity to exchange ideas. It was a reminder that meaningful progress happens when educators, industry, and development partners come together with a shared vision.

We extend our sincere appreciation to ESTDEV, Kenyatta University, the organisers, speakers, and all participants for creating a platform that encouraged open dialogue, knowledge sharing, and meaningful partnerships.

As Kenya continues to strengthen its position as a digital innovation hub, collaborations like these will play a vital role in developing the next generation of software engineers, innovators, and technology leaders.

At kood/Nairobi, we are proud to be part of this journey.

Because the future of ICT education is not built in isolation, it is built through collaboration.
