What is the Selection Sprint?

3 weeks · on-site · Nairobi

Intense but fun — 3 weeks on-site

The Selection Sprint is a three-week coding bootcamp held fully on-site at our Nairobi campus. It features daily assignments, examinations, and collaborative weekend projects — all designed to test your commitment and your ability to learn independently.

The Sprint serves two purposes at once. For you as a candidate, it is a chance to experience //kood’s self-directed learning approach before committing to the full programme. For us, it is how we identify the most motivated future students. Around 15% of participants exit during the three weeks — and we consider that a good thing. It means the people who reach the end are genuinely ready.

Previous participants have described the experience as transformative, with some noting they gained as much practical programming knowledge from the Sprint as from an entire year of university study.

What does a week look like?

Each day brings a series of 5–15 exercises — Java programs or terminal-based tasks — that build on each other as the week progresses. The work is self-paced, but the pace is real. You are expected to push through problems, get stuck, and find your way out.

The first week closes with an exam on Thursday. The second week closes with an exam on Friday. Exams are closed-book — no internet access — testing whether you can think through a problem and produce working code from what you have learned.

Weekends are for group projects. Teams tackle problems together, reinforcing the week’s material while also building the collaboration habits that define how //kood students work.

More than just coding

The Sprint is not only about what happens at your keyboard. The people you spend three weeks alongside become a genuine community. //kood organises events — board game nights, morning runs — but the most memorable moments tend to be the ones participants create themselves.

Past sprinters consistently describe the period as one of the more formative stretches of their lives. The friendships and professional connections that form during these three weeks often last well beyond the programme itself.

Is it for you?

The Selection Sprint is open to anyone. No CV, no diploma, no prior coding experience. The only requirements are your time, your curiosity, and a willingness to sit with hard problems.

If you make it through, you will know — in a way that no application form can tell you — whether this path is the right one.
